This is just a small photo that Nadija brought to the photography class. It shows a wedding in Afghanistan and on it are her grandmother, her mother and a sister. Nadija is now in the Netherlands and she came here as a young refugee. Of course, this is about memories and the home she had to leave.
For me, her teacher, it is one of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen. Not only the happy people and the occasion, but also the small format, the bad bluish colour, the damage and wrinkles work together to tell this interesting story so far away.
Ideas in teaching:
Maybe your students can bring their favourite photograph? Could also be a copy or from a book etc.
